In this 3-week distance learning course, Dr Robert Biswas-Diener and Dr. Laura Lewis Mantell take you on a tour of one of the fastest growing sectors of the coaching industry. Course participants will be exposed to a wealth of research related to stress, happiness, and the mind-body connection. This will serve as the scientific foundation of the practical skills taught in this course.
This course was created by Dr. Laura Lewis Mantell who also created the first pain management service in New York City and has served as President of the Eastern Division of the American Pain Association. She has trained in mind-body medicine, stress management, and acupuncture. Laura is an ICF credentialed coach and a leading authority on Positive Diagnosis.

Course Learning Objectives
- Define their own concept of wellbeing
- Know how to use positive psychological interventions
- Use the power of mindset as a coaching tool and understand the role of expectation in goal pursuit
- Utilize the stress response as a psychological resource
- Apply the science of willpower in everyday life as well as pursue important goals
- Make a positive diagnosis
Lessons:
Each class meeting has two lessons to be completed in advance of the meeting. Lessons are unlocked on a weekly basis so that you can focus on the material for the upcoming class. There is a chart with lesson dates at the bottom of this syllabus.
Typically, lessons include:
- A pre-recorded lecture
- Handouts
- Required readings and option reading recommendations
- Recordings of each session are posted in the follow-up for each lesson
Attending class:
We use Zoom for our class meetings. Our Zoom meeting can be found in this syllabus. Please plan to arrive early enough to adjust your audio settings and ensure your technology is working properly. Class begins promptly.

Course Requirements:
Each student will be expected to participate in the class sessions as well as complete homework in advance of the class session. Students are required to attend 70% of all class sessions in person. If you miss a class or wish to listen to a previous class, they will be available on our website in the lesson section. These are not intended to be regular substitutions for attendance.
We also understand that some people find value in reviewing these recordings after the course has ended. We will make the recordings and materials available for 24 weeks after the course ends.
